“Heat of the Moment” Featured in Super Bowl Commercial

ASIA’s classic hit “Heat of the Moment” will be immortalized in a 2017 Super Bowl commercial for the new TV series “Lethal Weapon.” Special thanks to our great friend Tom Rowland at Universal Music for making this happen!!! What a beautiful tribute to our lost friend, John Wetton…

From Variety:

VARIETY – FOX WILL THROW SUPER BOWL SPOTLIGHT ON ’24,’ ‘EMPIRE,’ ‘APB’

Fox has sold dozens of Super Bowl ads to marketers like Pepsi, Kia and Skittles. But it will also air dozens of its own for programs like “Empire,” “APB, “The Mick” and “Lethal Weapon.”

Viewers of Super Bowl LI understand from the outset that they’ll see 60 or more high-caliber TV commercials, all part of the annual ritual of watching the game. What many fail to realize each year is that they will also see a bevy of “promos” for various TV shows  to which the network broadcasting the game hopes to draw attention. Fox expects to air about 30 promos across its Super Bowl broadcast, pre-game and post-game coverage, with about ten of them slated to air in the game itself.

Just like Budweiser and Snickers, networks have something to sell during the Super Bowl, too. Promos typically make up 15% of the Super Bowl’s ad time, according to Kantar, a tracker of ad spending, and about 25% to 30% of all the ads shown during the actual contest.

The choice of what shows to back often reveals which the network sees as being most critical to its operations. In Fox’s case, the most important pitch it will make on Game Day is convincing viewers to stick around for the launch of its “24: Legacy” revamp,  set to debut right after the end of the its post-game analysis. One of the promos will be an effort supported by Samsung, which has a big presence in the drama this season. That effort will alert viewers to a virtual-reality prequel available only via Samsung technology. In all, the 21st Century Fox-owned network expects to air as many as seven different promos for the show, a second episode of which will air on the Monday night following the Super Bowl broadcast.

The promos can often be as fun to watch as the traditional ads –  in some cases, even more so. CBS, for example, has sparked water-cooler chatter with its Super Bowl promos on two different occasions. In 2007, the network ran a promo for “The Late Show with David Letterman” showing the talk-show host and Oprah Winfrey watching the game on a couch. The surprise drew praise from viewers. In 2010, CBS threw Jay Leno into the mix, just weeks after NBC said it would return him to late night, ousting Conan O’ Brien in the process. That promo held its own against competing spectacles from Denny’s, GoDaddy.com and even a Motorola spot featuring actress Megan Fox – largely because Letterman and Leno had feuded famously over the years.

Fox’s promo push will start during its pre-game coverage. In the hours leading up to the game, Fox will highlight “24: Legacy, “APB,” “Lethal Weapon, “The Mick” and “Shots Fired.” Just before kickoff, the network will launch a special promo for “Masterchef Junior” featuring a ten-piece orchestra and four kid vocalists trying their hand at a tribute to the song “It’s A Hard Knock Life” from the Broadway play “Annie.” The new song and the routine around it were conceived by Martin Charnin, the play’s original lyricist and director.

During halftime, Fox will run a music-heavy promo for “Empire” that puts a spotlight on the character Cookie, all in an attempt to remind viewers the show returns to the air in March.

In an interesting twist, one promo for “Lethal Weapon” will feature the Asia song “Heat of the Moment,” in honor of John Wetton, a co-founder of the band who passed away earlier this week. Fox secured a go-ahead for the idea from the musician’s family.

John Wetton 1949-2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Wetton early this morning. There is so much that could be said about John’s “extraordinary life,” but Carl and Geoff wonderfully capture the feelings of the entire Asia family.

CARL PALMER STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF JOHN WETTON

“With the passing of my good friend and musical collaborator, John Wetton, the world loses yet another musical giant. John was a gentle person who created some of the most lasting melodies and lyrics in modern popular music. As a musician, he was both brave and innovative, with a voice that took the music of ASIA to the top of the charts around the world. His ability to triumph over alcohol abuse made him an inspiration to many who have also fought that battle. For those of us who knew him and worked with him, his valiant struggle against cancer was a further inspiration. I will miss his talent, his sense of humor and his infectious smile. May you ride easy, my old friend.

Carl Palmer.”

GEOFF DOWNES STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF JOHN WETTON

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart, that I have to report we have lost my dearest friend, brother, bandmate and long term musical collaborator, John Wetton, who has passed away after a long and tenacious battle with cancer. He will be remembered as one of the world’s finest musical talents, and I for one of many was wholly blessed by his influence. It was a massive privilege for me to have worked with this genius so closely on our numerous projects together over the years. His bass playing was revolutionary. His voice was from the gods. His compositions – out of this world. His sense of melody and harmony – unreal. He was literally a ‘special one’.

But John was much more than a gigantic and unique musical talent. He was a supremely intelligent man, marked with his great observations and wisdom about life; all couched within his wicked sense of humour. The wit was dark and deep, only fully perceptible to those on his same wavelength. I was fortunate enough to be able to be on that wavelength, and discover that we had much in common. Many of his personal life experiences were reflected in his lyrical contributions to the songs. His heart was always in the music. That was John, through and through. It was always about – the music.

As a person, he was fiercely loyal, loving and generous, particularly to those he cared about. But he could be as stubborn as a mule or as gracious as a nobleman, depending on the mood that grabbed him on any particular day. There were some who couldn’t read his brilliant mind and complex personality. Some found him charming, others infuriating. But however you found John, there was no denying his rare talent as a musician and songwriter was second to none.

Both of us having been brought up with similar backgrounds in provincial England, we shared a love of many things – sport, and in particular – football, English church music, current affairs, comedy, literature, you name it….pretty much everything that 2 kids from the sticks were exposed to in our youth.

Our planets seemed to be immediately in alignment when we first met in early 1981. There was a laddish camaraderie that grew between us as we became as close as two non-related brothers could be. He was an avid reader and film enthusiast, something he pursued with great interest. This helped inspire him to some wonderful lyrics to the literally hundreds of songs we composed together. Back then, we immediately hit the ground running as we composed much of the debut ASIA album together and forged a formidable partnership which lasted right up until now. It was a wholly natural process for us, whereby we could knock out 2 or 3 songs in an afternoon. They were always greeted with our gentlemanly handshake and smiles once we had wrapped up another one in the bag.

Above all else though, his passion for life was to the fore. The battles he endured throughout were immense and well documented. Firstly with alcohol, which he so resolutely overcame, then open heart surgery and finally cancer, which sadly was to take his life in the end. He once observed to me that this disease is a “merciless assassin”. Just another example of his perception and the descriptive language that he was so richly blessed with. He took all of these battles on board with great bravery and almost a ‘laissez-faire’ attitude, tinged with his inimitable wry wit.

To say I will miss my him greatly is beyond understatement. He was such an inspiration to me. We were planning another album, but sadly he was not well enough to complete it. I feel heartbroken about this, as I knew John thought it was to be one of our finest albums to date. I remain as proud as ever of our Wetton/Downes writing partnership. I am hoping one day that I will be able to finish it, and that it will be appreciated by all those who loved his and our music, and most importantly, a legacy he would have been proud of.

Life will not be the same without him. And words are not really enough to describe the loss I feel right now, and the many friends and fans all over the World will also be feeling. It is the end of an era for all of us. But we will soldier on – the music of John Wetton needs to be heard loud and clear from the rooftops.

Dearest John, may you rest in peace brother.

Geoffrey

Please join me in sending our sincerest thoughts and prayers to Lisa, Dylan and the entire Wetton family at this difficult time.”

A Personal Statement from John Wetton

I am disappointed to announce that, on the advice of my medical team, I have to withdraw from Cruise to the Edge, and from the first leg of the Journey tour, March 15 – April 4. I will soon be starting a new medical chemotherapy procedure, under which I will not be able to fly.

I am grateful to the promoters of the cruise.  I wish them pleasant sailing and I know my friends on the cruise, both artists and fans, will have a ball on the ocean wave,  I will be with you all in spirit.

My good friend Billy Sherwood will fill in for me within Asia, keeping my seat warm during the initial 12 Journey dates.  While I am naturally disappointed to miss the beginning of what I know will be an historic ASIA tour, I am intending to return to the stage with Asia later in 2017, dates soon to be announced. I know this decision will be in the best interests of my health and our fans, in the long run.

The band was saddened to hear about the passing of Greg Lake on Wednesday, December 7, after “a long and stubborn battle with cancer.” As a frontman for King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Greg helped craft music that would define progressive rock.
